“What’s in a Name?” Adapted from Mascots and Nicknames, Sporting Geography
Unit: United States and Canada, Topic: About
Objective/Learning Target
Students will identify, research, and explain how team mascots of U.S. or Canada regions relate to their geographic location and support economic growth.
Materials Needed-
· Computer or Device (1 per student or per partnership)
· What’s in a Name? Handout and Rubric (1 per student)
· Presentation Evaluation (1 per student)
· Presentation materials of choosing
o Prezi/
o Storyboard (storyboard that)
o Google Presentation
Teaching Strategy-
1. Assign students into groups of 2-3.
2. Allow groups to choose a NFL, NBA, NHL, NCAA, MLS, etc. team to research. (To ensure that groups are not choosing the same teams, have groups draw numbers for selection order. Once a team is chosen, it is eliminated from the choices.)
3. Handout “What’s in a Name?” Rubric and assignment and make sure students understand the directions.
a. Day 1 (daily grade): Students will choose team, set up bibme.org account for proper citation, begin research and decide on presentation type
b. Day 2 (daily grade): Complete Research and have teacher check progress. Homework if not completed in class on this day.
c. Day 3 (major grade): Storyboard Presentations
4. During presentations, students will complete an evaluation of each team and their economic, social, political and cultural contributions to society.
Modification: Complete research on the rubric and present orally or turn in for a grade without presenting depending on level of student.
Extension: What about your school? Most schools have a nickname or school mascot. In addition school names often have a connection to the region. What is your school name and relationship to the region? What is your school mascot? Is it related to the history or geography of your region? If not, is there a different mascot that would better fit your school relating to the history/geography of the region?
